DVR is cheaper. You usually have to buy a Tivo and then pay a monthly fee on top of it. DVRs just have a monthly fee. Tivo allegedly has some features that a DVR doesn't such as being able to suggest shows that you might want to watch. But if you just want the basics, a cable DVR should be just fine.
