Here is a feel-good part of the story that Jeff left out.  When the football
pool was first started years ago, the entry fees were awarded as prize money
(some to weekly winners and some to the overall champ).  Several years
later, one of the players who absolutely loved the weekly pool lost his bout
with leukemia at age 32.  The season after that happened, the pool
membership began donating all entry fees to a charity that his mom created
that purchases books for under-served schools in the Chicago area.  So each
year the pool fees are used to buy books, and the winner gets no money, but
there are plaques in various Chicago area schools noting the donations from
"The Football Pool."  I hated losing, but at least the money goes to a great
cause.

For those who don't know - a number of us participate in a weekly NFL pool
in which we pick the winners of all of the NFL games and rank them by
confidence.  This year there were 3-4 teams that were at or near the top of
the standings nearly all season.  Mr. B pulled into the lead a few weeks ago
and looked to be fighting it out with Phil Kamp for the title.  But I was
lurking in the shadows.  While I had stayed within the top 4 teams nearly
the entire season, I had never been in first place.  In 3rd place coming
into the final week, I adopted a strategy of hoping for a few big upsets.
Ultimately, it came down to Tennessee taking a late lead and then holding
off Seattle to allow me to secure a 1 point victory.  In fairness to Mr. B,
he had a great season.  And I'd like to think it was more about my putting
together a great final week than Mark choking.  

 

You might also not know that the Kleins, the Blockers and the Winicks as
well as Uncle Doug participate in a fantasy football league.  The
championship pitted Andy's youngest, Jason, against yours truly.  Jason, who
has been in the championship game all 3 years and the defending champion,
put up a great fight.  But for the 2nd time in the 3 year history of the
league, he ran into a buzzsaw in the championship.  And for the 2nd time in
the last 3 years, I am the champion.  Bettr yet, in the consolation round
matchups, my oldest Benjamin beat Mr. B and my youngest, Sam beat Andy.  A
huge day in the Winick household.
