<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">Last month, we had some discussions with Brian Walton about how we plan to handle Ohtani for 2018, which Brian wrote up and published here: <a shape="rect" href="http://creativesports2.com/will-your-league-make-otani-a-two-way-player-in-2018/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">"Will

<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">A couple of points of clarification/amplification:</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>1.<span>
</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">We assumed that we would get requests to handle Ohtani in every conceivable manner (and that's already proved to be true). The only way to program all the possible options is to create two distinct
players, one the hitter Ohtani, and one the pitcher Ohtani. The pitcher Ohtani gets all and only Ohtani's pitching stats, and the hitter Ohtani will get all of Ohtani's hitting stats -- even on days when hitter Ohtani's fielding position is pitcher. <b>HOWEVER... </b>that
doesn't mean that you won't be able to treat Ohtani as a single player on a single team -- you definitely will be able to do that. See below for the details.</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>2.<span>
</span></span></span><b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">This is the most important point in this note:</span></b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"> Each league will need to decide whether hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani are truly
distinct players -- <b>like identical twins,</b> who could be on different league teams, or if hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani are tied together into just one player -- <b>conjoined twins, as it were, </b>who are owned by just one league team. <b>IF YOU WANT
THERE TO BE JUST ONE OHTANI, THE CONJOINED TWINS OPTION IS THE ONE YOU WANT. THIS OPTION WILL FUNCTION<i>EXACTLY</i> AS THOUGH THERE WERE JUST ONE OHTANI</b>.</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">If you select the "identical twins" options, you're done -- there are no further ramifications (you can elect to exclude one or the other of the twins from the league, but that's no different
from the way you'd handle excluding any player). <i>Note: "identical twins" Ohtani will be the default. If you want to use this option, you won't need to do anything.</i></span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>3.<span>
</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">If you select the "conjoined twins" option however, there are a few other things to consider. (Note, because of the way we will need to program this, the league team which owns Ohtani will see
both the hitter Ohtani and the pitcher Ohtani on his roster -- but that's just a programming artifact.) Leagues will need to decide:</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:1.0in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>1.<span>
</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">Can his owner start both hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani at the same time? We will definitely allow Ohtani's owner to start <b>either</b> hitter Ohtani <b>or</b> pitcher Ohtani, flipping from
week to week, if you like -- but what about using <b>both</b> hitter and pitcher Ohtani as active at same time? Note that if your league does decide to allow the both at once option, when his owner elects to do this, hitter Ohtani will have to take up an active
hitter slot (UT/DH or OF if he plays there) and pitcher Ohtani will have to take up an active pitcher slot. In other words, if you want both his hitting and pitching stats during the same transaction period (day or week or other), you need to use up two of
your active line-up slots.</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:1.0in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>2.<span>
</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">Related to the above, if you have the "conjoined twin" Ohtanis in your league, you will need to decide if he counts as one reserve slot or two. If your league decided to go with "either hitter
Ohtani or pitcher Ohtani can be active, but not both" in the previous section, then we think it reasonable to treat the Ohtanis as just one player as far as roster limits go -- i.e., if hitter Ohtani is active, pitcher Ohtani <b>does not</b> count as a reserve,
since you can't use both of them at the same time anyway. If you do permit owners to use hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani in their starting line-up at the same time, then it seems fair that they should each always take up their own roster slot, regardless
of whether they are active or reserved.</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">As always, though, if you want to do things differently than we've suggested, we'll work with you to implement your preferences.</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.5in;"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;"><span>4.<span>
</span></span></span><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">If you use a salary cap and elect the "conjoined twins" path, some of this gets even more complicated. Does each Ohtani get the full salary, or is it split? If one is active but not the other,
how much of his salary counts again the cap? And if you have an active line-up cap and a total roster cap, which Ohtani counts how much against which cap?</span></p>
<p class="ydp1bf7fd3eyiv4274951289MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#1F497D;">That's the gist of the Ohtani issue (we hope we're not missing anything significant, at least). The main thing to decide is whether the two Ohtanis can play on different teams or if they are
tied together.</span></p>
