can put them on reserve. See Rule 17.4. However, I am not sure that any retained player is on the DL, so the rule has no impact this year (according to MLB.com, neither Ohtani nor Severino are on the DL). Here is a link to the injury status of all players,
and ones on the DL are indicated:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
